A university of applied sciences is a special kind of university. It is very important to attend practical job experience.
Lecture hall is the name for a big room in the university where the lectures take place. Sometimes you have to step up some stairs to get to your seat. That is similar to a cinema.
After the lectures students knock on their desks to thank the professor for his/her lecture. You can compare that with clapping.
During your school-time you name them as classmates. During your studies you call them fellow students.
The president is the supreme representative person of a university, comparable with the director of a school. At the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences Mr. Schulz is the president.
Professors are the teachers at the university. They do not only teach but they like to do researches on new projects. This photo shows Prof. Langnickel. He works at the department of social work in Cottbus.
German students say "Mensa", this word is from Latin language and means "table". The refectory is a room where students and professors take their meals.
The semester is comparable with the half of a school year. The year has two semesters, a winter and a summer semester. The period of time where no lectures at the university take place are named as semester holidays. Nevertheless, students have to do a lot for their studies during this period of time.
Lectures are comparable with your lessons. The professors speak about a certain topic. The students listen carefully, make some notices, and ask questions. Generally, a lecture takes 90 minutes, your children's university takes 45 minutes.
