Faculty of Science (Faculty 2)

Faculty of Science of the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences on the campus in Senftenberg. Teaching and training in the disciplines Chemistry and Process Technology takes place in the building on the right hand side, the building for the courses in Biotechnology is seen on the left hand side.

The Faculty of Science (Faculty 2) of the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences was founded in July 2011 and includes the study courses Chemistry and Biotechnology. Currently, there is the opportunity to choose between a bachelor and a master course in both programmes, respectively.

At this time there are about 410 students enrolled. Teaching staff is composed of 16 professors and about 50 further staff members. The teaching in the courses Chemistry and Biotechnology is underpinned by numerous research projects across a number of disciplines, including inorganic solids, porous carbon materials, silicon chemistry, biopolymers, microbiology, enzyme technology, phototrophic biotechnology, (molecular) cell biology, medically oriented research (diagnostics, tissue engineering) and many more.

The Faculty of Science is located on the campus in Senftenberg. In 1998, the department moved into a new laboratory building (see figure on the right hand side), which was designed and built for the courses in Chemical Engineering and Process Technology. With the start of the winter semester in 2007 the new laboratory building for Biotechnology was ready to be used by staff and students (see figure on the left hand side).

The origin of the Faculty of Science goes back to 1991when the department of Chemical Engineering / Process Technology was founded. The first students were graduates of the former Engineering College in Senftenberg. Students were first enrolled in Process Technology in September 1992 and in Chemical Engineering from the winter semester of 1994 with the degree of graduate engineer (Diplomingenieur FH). Out of the option Biotechnology in the course Chemical Engineering, increasingly popular since the start of 1998, arose an independent course Biotechnology, which was started in the winter semester 2000 as a successive bachelor / master course. According to this extension of courses the department was renamed in July 2001 to department of Biotechnology, Chemical and Process Engineering.

In 2005, the degree courses Chemical Engineering and Process Technology were combined into the bachelor course Chemical Engineering with the specialisations of Chemistry and Process Technology. In summer 2009 the new master course Natural Product Chemistry started and with the beginning of the winter semester 2010 the course Chemical Engineering was replaced by the bachelor course Chemistry. In summer 2011 the master course Natural Product Chemistry was expanded to the master course Chemistry.
